Top 10 Most Reliable Cars On The Road

Posted in: Cars | | No Comments »>

In recent years it has been the Japanese and Korean car manufacturers that have cornered the reliability stakes of motor vehicle manufacturing and they continue to do so without any real competition from their European counterparts. In fact, not one motor vehicle hailing from the occident has made it onto the elite list of the top 10 most reliable cars on the road.

Right up until twenty years ago, motor vehicles may have been sexy and sassy but they weren’t necessarily built with the long haul in view. Manufacturers concentrated more on sleek lines and aerodynamics rather than on steadfast reliability.

But all this changed in the 1980’s with the introduction of extended vehicle warranties. For the first time, manufacturers were held responsible for teething problems and other manufacturing faults and from then on in it wasn’t so much the good looks and charisma that sold the end product but the reliability factor that eclipsed all others in importance.

Increasingly more time and technology have been earmarked to improve safety features and the knowledge that the manufacturers would have to bear the cost of repair themselves has motivated a system greatly beneficial to the motorist.

The Europeans haven’t been knocked off their lofty pedestal completely; they are still the sector leaders in motor vehicle technology and remain the prime innovators of the industry. However, if you have any intention of buying a new car, or even a used car in Cape Town, we would advise you to have a good look at the list of the safest and most reliable cars on the road today.

]]>

Below are the top 10 most reliable cars on the road according to the warranty claims against each:

1. Honda Accord – what it lacks in style and pure sex appeal it gains in resolute reliability! Only 9.9% of Hondas needed to be repaired over a two year period and with a marketing message “Isn’t it nice when things just work?”, it seems more than apt that the Japanese-produced Honda claims the respected and important title of ‘most reliable’.

2. Subaru Forester – Japan can add the silver to the gold in the reliability Olympics as this car clocks in at second place. Not the best looking of motor vehicles, it is tough and tenacious, especially on difficult and rugged off-roads. With a spacious interior and dependable handling, it is a popular choice – but keep an eye on the consumption as it does have a reputation of being a bit of a gas guzzler.

3. Mazda MX5 - Well, well, well, the Japanese are clearly dominating these games and walk away with yet another winning model. This time it is from the Mazda stable, considered one of the top most trustworthy manufacturers. This elegant and sporty car has re-invented dependability and is today considered the most reliable convertible ever produced.

4. Mitsubishi Carisma – this makes it four in a row for Japan and although car fundis won’t go to the ends of the earth for this somewhat dull offering, it is still a great investment for the family man.

5. Toyota Yaris – yet another spectacular Japanese innovation, is right up there with the safest of vehicles on the roads. It recently claimed the highest crash test rating and its rather unsightly bonnet conceals a unique Minimal Intrusion Cabin System, which disperses energy from impact through the body.

6. Honda Civic – The powerful Honda stable has two in the top ten with the Civic model. The most popular of the Honda range, the Civicboasts a sizeable interior, making it the ideal family car.

The remaining manufacturers that have made it onto the top ten are Nissan, Hyundai and Lexus, so if you are considering replacing your set of wheels with a new or used car, forget the graceful lines and outsized engines and opt for safety instead by going east, young man.

Toyota iQ: The Smallest Four-Passenger Car in the World

Posted in: Cars | | No Comments »>

Toyota, the giant Japanese auto manufacturer has launched Toyota iQ which is considered to be world’s smallest four-passenger car. This model has been specially designed for the European market where it will offer customers “a new mode of urban transport”.

The name iQ is the best representation of what the car symbolizes. “i” stands for “individuality”, at the same time also expressing “innovation” and “intelligence”. “Q” stands for “quality”.

The new iQ is a sophisticated car, Its revolutionary packaging measures less than three metres in length, yet has a flexible interior space that allows up to three adults, plus a child or luggage to travel comfortably. The iQ’s dimensions are 9.79 ft in length and 4.9 ft in height which fits well to be the most compact car.

]]>

The dynamic under-floor fuel tank enables the car to have shorter rear overhangs. A smaller air-conditioning system means that the iQ can be built with an “asymmetric dashboard”, which allows the front passenger’s seat to be situated fore of the driver’s seat for more overall cabin space. The mini car is small yet spacious, which at the same time has been designed to meet the top 5-star safety rating of EURO NCAP.

The European market will get the choice of either a 1.0-liter inline-3 with a five-speed manual transmission or a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-4 diesel with a six-speed manual. In mid-2009, a 1.3-liter inline-4 with variable valve timing will become available, and it’ll feature either the six-speed manual or a CVT (continuously variable transmission). Meanwhile, Japan will get the 1.0-liter inline-3 matched with a CVT.

Toyota, wants it to be the most affordable car ever. iQ, delivers low fuel consumption and low emissions from both its diesel and two petrol engines. The car maker expects sales to reach 100,000 units globally in 2009. The T-Brand’s new iQ will send rival small car makers back to the drawing board pretty soon.

Role of Hybrid Cars in the Current Auto Crisis

Posted in: Cars | | No Comments »>

The downfall of the economy has left a major effect on the automotive industry. The automotive industry crisis of 2008-2009 is just another of the unprecedented events in the car industry’s long history. The collapse of the economy and the consequent slowing down has affected the U.S. auto markets much more than the European or the Asian markets.

This fall started during the 2003-2008 energy crises that resulted in the collapse of poor fuel-efficient vehicles like sports utility vehicles and pickup trucks. The Big Three of the American market slowly had to admit their defeat when car sales began to slide. The rise in prices of raw materials that were essential for car manufacturing was another factor that led to its great plunge.

In the meantime, the Big Three, GM, Ford and Chrysler, were facing criticism for their irresponsible role in ignoring the impact their cars had on environmental politics. Al Gore, in the 2007 edition of his book, ‘An Inconvenient Truth”, said that these companies are “trying to sell large, inefficient gas-guzzlers” in spite of the poor demand for their products.

]]>

The U.S. auto’s fuel efficiency requirement was another critical aspect, which along with these other factors, made the market formulate a switch to European and Japanese cars for a solution. While the car manufacturers were striving for 45 mpg in Japan, 35 mpg in China, 52 mpg in the EU by 2012, this figure was a pitiful 25 mpg in the U.S. resulting in a public outcry. Moreover, the impact it would impose on the environment made it a major cause of worry for environmentalists and politicians alike.

As a result, in the middle of the auto crisis, some took this opportunity to present new potential options. These were hybrid cars. After the launch of the first hybrid car in 1999 in the U.S., the Honda Insight, there was no looking back. Statistics reveal that the first 17 sales in December 1999 was followed by the sale of 1.5 million hybrids.

Today the competition with hybrid car manufacturers has risen tremendously. Hybrid car manufacturers, like the 2010 Toyota Prius, 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid FWD and Honda Civic Hybrid 2010, aim at 51/48 mpg, 41/36 mpg and 40/45 mpg fuel efficiency, respectively, on both city roads and the highway. The increased efficiency of these cars brought down the cost to drive 125 miles to an amount between .71 and .31.

In the current economic crunch where every penny counts, hybrid cars ensure maximum service to its customers. Toyota, for example, offers a 100,000 mile warranty on the battery pack and emission components, and Honda offers an 80,000 mile warranty. The reduction in wear and tear results in better savings for consumers.

Annual greenhouse gas emissions are significantly lower, with the Honda Accord claiming 6.8 tons, and the Honda Civic Hybrid showing 4.4 tons annually, and an annual 8 tons for premier gasoline engine.

In short, with better fuel efficiency, interesting price ranges, attractive features and a faster payback period, these hybrid cars play a great role in the modern economic scenario.

There is a lot of competition about in the car hire insurance market

Posted in: Cars | | No Comments »>

In 2002 Larry Ursich founded insurance4carhire.com. He had previously run his own car rental broking company for 10 year. He was concerned about the high costs being charged by the car hire companies for Excess cover and decided to develop a better alternative: annual car rental Excess insurance products offering customers convenience, peace of mind and very significant savings.

So that was the beginning of the business and over the next few years the product was developed and the company included new brands like the dailyexcess.com and in January 2008 the insurance4carhire.com operation was sold to Towergate . About the same time Questor Insurance and Carhire-excess.com, also started offering car hire insurance.

Today the market looks flooded, admittedly some of the organizations offering car hire excess insurance use one of the established brands. For example The AA, insuremycar.com, Rental car hire insurance, Swinton, Go cover, ECB, carentalexcessinsurance, carhireinsure use insurance4carhire and confused.com and Intasure use Questor. This still leaves some fourteen others selling this product.

]]>

Earlier this year Halo Insurance Services launched iCarhireinsurance.com and Odyssey insurance launched their excess products. Most of these companies are based in Britain, The Isle of Man and Ireland.

Prices are becoming keener with European daily excess products starting at £1.94 / €2.95 per day and European annual products starting at £39.75 / €49.00. In the last few months to help the consumer a price comparison site has been established, although it is not really too difficult for the average person to look at the main providers and see what that company is offering for it’s daily or annual policy.

http://www.insurance4carrental.com/a car hire insurance advertising site is now promoting six providers. Insurance4carhire, daily excess.com, Questor, Essential Travel, Odyssey and iCarhireinsurance. Details about each provider’s products are easy to locate and compare as each product is located on an individual page.

One area where there is not too much competition is with van hire insurance. Just as important as car hire excess insurance. A division of Towergate’s insurance4carhire has set up insuremyvan.com. This product is being advertised on the http://www.insurance4vanrental.com/site. Unlike the car hire products which are available on a worldwide market, this is only available in the UK at present

None of the excess insurance companies appear to be addressing a growing sector of the market. Motorhome hire. There are more and more people renting these vehicles and in fact one of the world’s largest car brokers, holiday autos has recently added this together with UK van hire to their range of vehicle rental products.

Hopefully an insurance company will introduce a product in due course to deal with the campervan market.

What happens next in the car hire insurance business, will there be more entrants or are there too many already? Has it got too confusing?

Baby And His car Seat

Posted in: Cars | | No Comments »>

In the developed countries such as European countries, the United States, and Canada, the use of car seat for baby is a must. A child or baby must wear it when he is inside the car when he is in a certain age, weight and/or height.

Muscle Cars Versus Sports Cars

Posted in: Cars | | No Comments »>

Well before World War II, American automakers as well as automakers from several European countries had started to produce extremely fast and powerful cars. Certainly, that concept was not strange at that time, however these cars were particularly expensive and suited for the high end clientele who had a great need for speed. As the 1950s and 1960s approached, manufacturers started to put out what they referred to as muscle cars, which were high powered, high acceleration vehicles that provided the same power as the high end models made previously, except they were at a much more affordable price

Ironically, if you wish to own a muscle car today, you need to be prepared to pay about the same price as you would for a European sports cars or more. Since many of the popular muscle cars are no longer in production, they are pretty rare, and thus quite expensive. As an example, a mint condition 1970 Chevelle can cost upwards of ,000 or more. A rare 1970 Superbird, even one that needs reconditioned, can sell for 0,000 or more. This is because only 2,000 of these models were ever produced.

Often times, the difference between owning a sports car today and a muscle car isn’t about the cost, but the preference of the owner. If someone wants a sleek, low profile car that catches people’s eye, and exudes class and distinction, they would probably opt for a sports car. Those who love the raw power and looks of a muscle car, will be more than happy to pay a similar price for a top of the line model of their choice.

In the end, there will always be debate about sports cars vs. muscle cars. Some people will tell you that they all belong in the same category, while others will vehemently deny these cars should ever be classed together. In reality, all that matters is that the car you buy makes you a happy and proud owner. Hopefully it is One that you will want to show off and is the apple of your eye, even ten years after you bought it!

Australian Touring Cars

Posted in: Cars | | No Comments »>

The Australian Touring Car Championship has a long and chequered history. The first Championship was held in 1960 as a single race for Appendix J Touring Cars. This was due to the rising popularity of races held for passenger sedans as opposed to more purpose built open wheel racing cars, or sports cars. The original race was held at the Gnoo Blas circuit in Orange, New South Wales. The early years of the ATCC saw the once-a-year event visit mostly rural circuits, before finally visiting a major city circuit, Lakeside Raceway on the outskirts of Brisbane in 1964. This race was also the first race not won by a Jaguar saloon, with Ian Geoghegan winning the first of his five titles in a Ford Cortina. From 1965, the title would largely be won by drivers in American V8 powered muscle cars, most notably the Ford Mustang. The first victory by a driver in an Australian vehicle was by Norm Beechey, who won the title in a Holden Monaro.

A competition’s first major change occurred when the championship developed from a single race into a multi-event series. The ‘Supercar scare’ that had rocked the build up to 1972 Bathurst 500 forced sweeping changes through touring car regulations, and led to new ones being implemented. The regulations which governed the ATCC, known at the time as Group C, were amalgamated with the more basic Group E Series Production Touring Cars regulations which governed the Bathurst touring car endurance race in a compromise between the two. This created a single class for touring car racing that would dominate Australian Touring Car racing until the introduction of Group A in 1985. This period was famous because it resulted in increasing conflicts between the manufacturers Holden and Ford, and also the era’s two leading drivers, Peter Brock and Allan Moffat. Between them, Brock and Moffat claimed seven of the era’s 12 championships and nine of the Bathurst victories.

Attention had traditionally focused on Holden and Ford, but that changed when European and Japanese manufacturers joined the Australian agents of the two big American companies; the trend starting in 1981 with BMW, Mazda and Nissan. The international Group A regulations, already utilised by European and Japanese touring car series, allowed them to compete on equal terms. Holden was forced briefly into a catchup phase, all but backing out of the sport in 1992. The ATCC continued to be used until the end of the 1998 season, after which V8 Supercar organisers altered the name of the series, eventually adopting its present identity, the V8 Supercar Championship Series. The winner of the V8 Supercar Championship Series is awarded the title of Australian Touring Car Champion.

All of the drivers involved in the ATCC however, all have years of practice behind them, and as such you should never try to replicate the speeds they reach. It’s far safer to sit and watch them on television, as if the average driver tried to replicate the sort of skills that the professionals use, they’d be looking at windshield replacement prices at the very best, and a long stay in hospital (or worse) if it all really went wrong.

Classic Cars In Cuba

Posted in: Cars | | No Comments »>

Havana is a potent mixture of the old and the new. Modern office buildings punctuate the skyline alongside deteriorating Eastern European residential towers. Ancient vehicles, some with more rust than paint, share the road with newer, shinier models, while horse-drawn carts mingle with motorcycles. Flea markets display Cuba holiday mementos – wooden models of cars built in the 1950s, which are still seen on Cuban streets.

’Yank tank’, ‘máquina’ ‘cacharro’ and ‘bartavia’ are all words used to describe the American classic cars in Cuba. It is the only place where history and circumstance have combined to enable a whole society to preserve these amazing vehicles and turn them into a national treasure.

About 150,000 classic cars existed at the time of the 1959 Cuban Revolution when the U.S. imposed a trade embargo on Cuba. After this, international trade was made very difficult, so the cars that were present at the time have been nurtured and cared for ever since.

Of the 60,000 classic cars in Cuba, about half are from the 50s, another 25 percent from the 40s and a similar number from the 30s. Brands include Chevrolet, Ford, Cadillac, Buick, Plymouth, Chrysler, Dodge, Willy’s, Oldsmobile and De Soto – vintage models of all of these can be seen on Cuba’s roads today.

Nostalgia

As a clash of cultures and ideologies, few experiences compare with that of rounding a corner in the heart of Old Havana with its crumbling baroque buildings and coming face to face with a gleaming 1955 Thunderbird that looks as if it had just been driven off the lot.

]]>

Cubans are increasingly aware of the value of classic cars, particularly when visiting Americans become nostalgic about them. They realize that there is business to be made from hiring them out, and it is therefore possible for those on holiday to Cuba to hire out a classic car for the duration of their stay. Although there are more classic cars in the US overall, an American would have to go to Cuba to see a concentration of the cars filling the streets like a snapshot of 50s USA come to life.

Cuba holiday makers feel they have stepped into a time warp to that perhaps more innocent age, when Americans sported prim and proper outfits and drove shiny, sparkly-wheeled cars in brilliant colours with fins and chrome bumpers. The cars made driving feel special. The size of them and the comfort gave a calm feeling for a time when people were able to take their time and enjoy the good things in life.

Care & Attention

While classic cars are still used for daily transportation, often as taxis, they have also become cherished heirlooms handed down from generation to generation within families, in some cases going all the way back to the 30s.

Most owners of classic cars spend hours applying waxes and polishes and basking in the praise and admiration of passers-by. Some even reminisce about a time when their cars were new, and life itself seemed brighter and as inviting as an open highway.

To own one of these vintages defines who you are, how you spend your time and how you wish to be known, and Cubans will go to incredible lengths to keep their classic cars running. 1950′s bumpers and tailpipes are recreated and myriad other parts are adapted. Steering wheels carved from wood, hub cabs made from aluminum cans and plastic sheets for windows are common. While such shortcuts would be frowned upon in the United States, classic car lovers admire the Cubans’ ingenuity and their ability to keep the cars running.

The Future for Classic Cars in Cuba

Each day these cars get closer to extinction. They are now outnumbered by boxy Russian Ladas, Volga sedans and more recent Eastern European and Japanese imports. But the biggest threats to Cuba’s classic cars are the scarcity of parts and lack of original factory literature to maintain them with uniform standards.

Hopefully they will still be preserved for years to come, even if they become increasingly temperamental with all the alterations they go through. If you’re thinking of hiring a classic car on your Cuba holiday make sure to make a ceremonial splash of rum on the car’s floorboard for good luck!

Mercedes Car Servicing at Low Cost

Mercedes car servicing at low cost

How to save money on your next Mercedes service

Mercedes servicing is now much cheaper, for those in the know.

Thanks to European legislation, you no longer have to be tied to high Mercedes service costs, dictated by your local dealer.

In October 2003 new European legislation affecting the motor industry came into force called “Block Exemption Regulation” 14002002 (BER), and this now means that you can book your next Mercedes car service online and save up to 50% on what you might pay at your local Mercedes dealer.

Before the law changed it was difficult to have new cars within their warranty period serviced outside a franchised dealer. If you wanted to shop around for the best prices on Mercedes servicing, your hands were tied.

The change in the law now gives every car owner the freedom to service their car away from the main dealers, and still have their warranty protected.

Thousands of Mercedes car owners have now taken advantage of their new right and reduced their Mercedes serving costs, whilst benefiting from the convenience of booking with national car service providers such as Service A Car.

]]>

Service A Car is a leading online car servicing network that prides itself on the quality of its Mercedes servicing, their customer service and transparent pricing. Because the company is not tied to any particular car manufacturer, they are able to service any make of vehicle and compete freely in the market, on a like-for-like.

Every vehicle is rigorously serviced according to the manufacturer’s servicing schedule, using genuine recommended parts fitted by qualified technicians. This means that every Mercedes car service fulfils the warranty criteria and there is no compromise on the servicing standards of a main dealer.

Companies like Service A Car, who fulfil the warranty criteria when servicing your Mercedes, are able to maintain your service book, just as main dealer can – thereby protecting your warranty and helping you to maximise the resale value of your Mercedes car.

Of course, booking direct with a national car servicing network has its own advantages:

•· You no longer have to do all the running around. Service A Car collects your Mercedes in the morning and delivers it back that afternoon, free of charge

•· You pay a fixed Mercedes service price, which can be up to 50% below the price at the Mercedes servicing desk of your local dealer

•· No additional work is carried out without your agreement, which means no nasty surprises when it comes to paying the bill

•· Trained Customer Advisers are on hand throughout the day to keep you informed of progress, and report back on problems you asked to be investigated as part of your Mercedes service e.g. knocks and rattles

•· Your Mercedes service includes a free wash and vacuum clean

•· You simply pay with your credit or debit card and your car is delivered back to your home or work address.

Our advice for saving money on Mercedes car servicing is to contact a national car servicing network, who is not tied to any one particular car manufacturer, like Service A Car.

So, before you book your next Mercedes service, why not ask your local dealer to tell you the cost of the service (plus parts, oil and any extras) and then compare it with a fixed price quote from a national servicing network, like Service A Car?

Car Wax ? A way to protect your car from dust or corrosion

Posted in: Cars | | No Comments »>

Some men treat their cars with more respect than their spouses-because they last longer than the later. Jokes apart! The secret of a shiny and glitzy car goes back to European history. Over 100 years ago, the Europeans used to apply animal fat over horse-drawn carriages to protect the paint. The same tradition continues with car wax, but with a modern and scientific approach. No matter how good the quality of your car paint is, it will surely lose its glossy finish and go dull with time. But a car wax can definitely protect car color from fading and give a glossy look for a long time.

With increasing pollution, acid rains and ultraviolet radiation, keeping healthy car paint is difficult. A simple method to keep it safe is – waxing. Car wax provides an easily renewable, transparent barrier between the finish and a hostile environment. It also makes the new or old car, look better. Many varieties of car waxes are available. They combine enriching oils that “wet” the surface with protective methods for high gloss finish and brilliant shine. Initially the quality of wax was thicker and at times in protecting the paint, would reduce the look and shine. But over the years enough research has been done in this field to produce car waxes that are thin, transparent and still offer great protection. These days the car waxes would form protective layer, as thin as 0.004 to 0.006 inches.

Applying car wax is the best way to protect your car from dust or corrosion that is caused by water. It takes about 30 minutes to apply car wax which would last for nearly three to four months, even keeping in mind a wash once in two weeks. There are two forms of wax available these days; paste and liquid. They differ basically in the amount of solvents. Hard Carnauba is diluted with solvents to produce a paste form or further diluted to produce the liquid form. When you apply a paste form, the friction of application helps melt the wax and evaporate the solvents. A liquid wax usually contains more volatile solvents that evaporate out when the wax is applied. The excess wax, left over lubricants, excess bonding agents, solvent residues and whatever else is left forms the layer that is buffed out to reveal the only the wax. And further polishing it leaves the car shiny.

Prospects for Electric Cars

Posted in: Cars | | No Comments »>

Speculation on the prospects for electric cars and their impact on the world’s economies make for interesting chatter. As China, the U.S. and European governments step up their stimulus programs to encourage electrification of vehicles, investors are starting to take notice. The question is which industries offer the best investing opportunity.

The Tesla Motors Roadster is expected to deliver 200 to 240 miles per charge, depending on driving conditions and usage. According to General Motors, the Chevrolet Volt, when it finally hits the showrooms, will get 40 miles between charges. The difference is due to the size of the batteries used to power the car. In the Tesla’s case there are more batteries installed on the car, as it depends only on battery power. The Volt will have a small gasoline engine to help recharge the batteries beyond the 40-mile limit. Other hybrid-eclectic vehicles such as the Toyota Prius also use a small gasoline engines to help charge the battery and in some cases add power to the wheels when necessary. The electric cars can be recharged by plugging the car into the power grid using a special adaptor, though some can be charged through the standard household electric outlet.

China has set a goal of producing half-a-million electric cars annually by 2011. To help stimulate this goal they have announced they are investing .4 billion in R&D. The United States has committed billion in stimulus spending to help design and manufacture better batteries. Vehicle manufacturers are receiving help to the tune of billion form the U.S. government to retool their production lines so they can produce larger number of fuel-efficient vehicles, including electric ones.

As more electrified cars and trucks move to the mainstream, they will require some significant changes in several industries if they are to be commercially successful. While some people may believe the move to electric cars is a long way off, the current drive by several major governments should not be ignored. The power trains, battery, and utility industries will each see investing opportunities.

Electric Power Trains

As shown by the success of the Tesla, start-up manufacturers are already making small inroads into the electric car industry. Faced with large legacy engineering and manufacturing processes, the incumbent auto and truck manufacturers must deal with the challenge of operating their existing vehicles while they introduce new vehicles including electric ones. Most of the vehicle manufacturers have outsourced all vehicle components other than engines and drive trains. Electric and hybrid-electric vehicles use significantly different engines and drive trains than your traditional gasoline or diesel powered cars and trucks. As a result, many of these companies must completely redesign their current engineering and manufacturing processes to adapt to the new electric power trains.

Controlling battery design and production will be a core skill that will help to differentiate a car or truck. If your car or truck can go 25% farther on the same charge, you will have a significant competitive advantage. In addition, the technology to manage power will require investment in electronics and software that is foreign to the auto manufacturers.

]]>

These new power trains open the door to innovations and start-up firms to capture a significant share of the market, as the traditional vehicle manufacturers wrestle with their transition from their current emphasis to new hybrids and all eclectic drive trains. As a result, many traditional vehicle manufactures will collaborate with or acquire these new firms. For example, Daimler A.G. has acquired nearly a 10 percent stake in Tesla Motors, which remains privately held.

Companies such as BorgWarner Inc., who produces the single-speed gearbox for the Tesla Roadster, will have to adjust their design, engineering, and production approach to meet the challenges of electric vehicles.

Battery Industries

The potential to displace oil as the power source for millions of vehicles is an interesting opportunity. Governments in China, the European Union, and the United States are trying to encourage industries to develop world-class battery technology, so they can become the world leader. Like many industries, the value of the product will shift from the basic components to total systems. Today, batteries are comprised of cells whose chemistry generates electricity. While important, cell chemistry is likely to become a commodity with little to differentiate it from others. For example, battery manufacturers have accomplished the transition from lead battery technology to lithium-based chemistry.

The most successful battery manufacturers will be the ones who move to system level capabilities designed to support specific vehicles. These systems will use electronics and software to offer power and thermal management capabilities that optimize the battery’s performance for a specific vehicle. This will require a more complex engineering and production capability. It will also require the battery manufacturers to work closely with the tier one drive train manufacturers and the auto manufacturers themselves. To succeed the battery manufacturers will have to develop significant new skills and capabilities so they can meet the needs of each vehicle. This will require substantial financial strength as well.

Engineers estimate that the cost of a battery for a plug-in electric car that gets 40 miles before it needs recharging is ,800. This cost increases to ,000 for a car that gets 100 miles per charge. The cost of a battery for a common laptop runs to 0. This gives you an idea of the opportunity for battery manufacturers. If the world were to see 6 million electrified vehicles sold per year, the market could be greater than billion. The cost of a battery will decline as volumes rise and economies of scale are achieved. Some analysts estimate we should expect a six to ten percent drop in the price of an equivalent battery over the next ten years. To achieve this, battery manufacturers will have to invest substantial sums in engineering and manufacturing.

Another challenge the battery manufacturers face will be how they deal with warranty issues. Today, these manufacturers have a relatively small exposure to warranty problems. Probably the largest has been problems associated with several laptop computers that have high failure rates or in some cases caused a fire. While serious, these batteries have a relatively low cost compared to the cost of an electric car’s battery. Replacing an entire battery system and possibly the vehicle will require new approaches as well as very strong balance sheets.

As each of us has witnessed, batteries have a useful life that grows shorter with use. Eventually batteries must be replaced. This creates a new aftermarket opportunity that has not existed. It also creates a disposal problem. Recycling cell phone and laptop batteries is one thing. Putting in place the process to recycle lithium car batteries is quite another. So far, there seems to be very little study on this problem, though it looms quite large as areas of the world move to electric cars. Where there is a problem there is an opportunity

Electric Utilities

Electric vehicles offer new opportunities for the electric utility industry. Most people assume that the plug-in vehicles would be recharged at night. If true, the electric utilities would not have to invest in new infrastructure, as this is an off-peak demand period. However, if drivers of electric vehicles found it necessary to plug their cars in during the day, a peak period use, they could force the utilities to invest in additional infrastructure to meet the higher demand. Companies might want to encourage their employees to drive electric cars by providing plug-in centers at their parking facilities, so drivers could recharge their cars during the day. I could even see some companies claiming this as a company benefit, using the service as a way to help offset their carbon producing facilities elsewhere.

Electric utilities are aware they must invest to create new smart grid capabilities that will help to manage usage of electricity. Electric cars will add to the demand for this new infrastructure. Utility company engineers see this as just another demand placed on the electric grid. However, we might see entrepreneurs employing renewable energy methods to take advantage of these opportunities. Maybe a windmill and or solar panels hooked up to a recharging unit in the parking lot will offer a way for cars to recharge without using the local electric utility.

The Bottom Line

Any time there is a fundamental change in the way an industry operates, new investing opportunities develop. Investors who understand these opportunities can reap the rewards. They also must manage the risks, as they can be large. These opportunities will come from several industries, but especially the drive train and the battery companies. To a lesser extent the electric utilities may also benefit, though not to the same extent, and possibly not at all.

As governments stimulate the move to use of electricity to replace oil, investors should be prepared to find opportunities to benefit. These opportunities will grow with time and the time is now to start your research.

European Vehicles Require High End Oils

Posted in: Cars | | No Comments »>

Many popular North American engine oils may actually be harmful to European engines. European automobile manufacturers design vehicles to use specific high quality lubricants with specific properties and additives. Most motor oils offered in America do not meet the demanding specifications, and the European lubricants are not readily available. As a result, problems such as premature wear and engine sludge develop.

Europeans build their cars and impose higher requirements on the type of oil than we are used to here in North America. They have more of a multi-tier system within their specifications, whereas the API uses the lowest common denominator as a guideline. It is by its own admission, within API 1509, a minimum spec.

While the American Petroleum Institute (API) sets oil standards in America, the Automotive Manufacturers Association (ACEA) sets them in Europe. ACEA standards reflect a wider complexity of the offering of engines on the market right now. On top ot that , manufacturers have introduced their own standards, most of which start with the ACEA standards, and go further in specific test to solve specific problems and address specific issues.

In the U.S., the API adopts one standard for all engines oils. For example they are working on ILSAC GF-4, and the problems they are running into is that this oil will be too thin for a lot of older engines. In Europe, they decided from the beginning that they would not adopt a linear standard-rather a standard for each type of application -gas, diesel, turbo, etc.

European vehicle manufacturers keep tight control over which lubricants they allow to be used in their vehicles. Inner-company bureaucracies are in charge of keeping the approved lubricant lists up-to-date with the latest requirements, and a few companies apply some of the regulations to North America. European aftermarket service stations must stock different lubricants for different automobile brands. Sometimes different models put out by the same manufacturer require different lubricants.

]]>

Do-it-yourselfers are less prevalent in Europe. Qualified repair shops, franchised are tightly controlled by the vehicle manufacturers in order to dictate the type of oil being used, typically perform most of the oil changes.

The high quality oils used Europe allow Europeans to enjoy longer drain intervals. However, when European vehicles are exported to the Untied States, the concept becomes distorted.

There is in general a longer drain associated with the higher tier oils in the European system, so the thought process is-if we don’t allow the longer drain in North America, consumers should be able to get by with API spec oils-but it leaves manufacturers open to the type of problems Mercedes-Benz recently experienced.

A recent class-action lawsuit brought forward by owners of certain 1998 through 2001 Mercedes-Benz vehicles claimed they weren’t informed that synthetic motor oil was required in order to take advantage of the extended drain intervals afforded through the use of the vehicles’ Flexible Service System (FSS). Many using conventional oils experienced premature wear problems, and the settlement will cost the company over million.

The long drain indicator used by Mercedes is predicated on using Mercedes-Benz-approved oil, which is a very top quality synthetic oil. When those vehicles came to the States, somehow dealerships weren’t impressing upon the consumer the need to use the right oil. And whether or not the dealers were doing so, some consumers were putting in regular API-spec oil, resulting in problems.

Not All Synthetics are Equal

Although synthetic motor oils are generally of higher quality than conventional oils, not all synthetics can meet the stringent European specifications. A good quality synthetic could solve the problem, but in the case of M-B, for example, you’re dealing with an extremely high-spec oil. Not every synthetic is going to meet that spec. Some only meet the baseline API specs. Just because it’s a synthetic doesn’t mean it’s a top tier product.

Shop owners must keep in mind that there are numerous special requirements for European vehicles and that they shouldn’t always be knee-jerking to the stuff in the big tank. If you call M-B, Volvo, or VW, for example, they should be telling you that their vehicle needs ACEA spec products.

Although it’s easy to assume that the more expensive the vehicle, the better quality the lubricant it needs, that’s not always the case. For example, the mid-priced Volkswagen TDI requires a very specific, high spec lubricant.

Formulated with top-of-the-line synthetic base stocks and robust additive packages, Amsoil synthetic motor oils provide superior protection and performance over competing synthetic and conventional motor oils and meet or exceed the most stringent European oil specifications. Meeting the more demanding ACEA spec is a top priority for Amsoil. In North America there just isn’t any other oil company making the top tier oils that meet European standards.

If Europeans can enjoy longer (20,000+) oil change intervals then why not here in America? They have been doing this for nearly two decades, why are we so far behind? Americans need to start asking more questions and demanding higher quality products.
