New Ford Focus ECOnetic emits just 99g/km CO2

The emissions of the new 2010 Ford Focus ECOnetic will drop to 99g/km CO2 which equates to 74.2mpg. This is achieved thanks to Ford’s new, optional Auto-Start-Stop system.

Focus ECOnetic versions without Ford Auto-Start-Stop still achieve 104 g/km CO2. Both of these emissions figures would have been unimaginable for a car of this size just a few years ago.

Regardless of whether Auto-Start-Stop is specified, the Focus ECOnetic has Smart Regenerative Charging and Low Tension FEAD (Front End Accessory Drive – don’t worry we’ll explain later) – technologies that are new to the Ford of Europe product line-up, and which combine to deliver lower emissions and better fuel efficiency and pave the way for future powertrains from Ford.

Power comes from Ford’s 109 PS 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine with standard coated Diesel Particulate Filter (cDPF). Target average CO2 emissions for the Auto-Start-Stop equipped model are as low as 99g/km, with a combined fuel economy of 74.2mpg and 104g/km for the standard Focus ECOnetic.

The new Focus ECOnetic is also the first vehicle to feature the new Ford Eco Mode system as standard. An all-new driver information system, Ford Eco Mode, helps to educate the driver to achieve improved real-world fuel economy.

The new Focus ECOnetic five-door is the first European Ford to offer a new Ford
Auto-Start-Stop system, which combines automatic engine start-stop operation with smart regenerative charging and advanced battery management systems.

The Ford Auto-Start-Stop system automatically shuts down the engine when the vehicle is at idle – at traffic lights, for example – and restarts the engine when the driver wants to move off, saving the fuel wasted at idle.

The system can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to five per cent in mixed driving conditions. In an urban environment and in heavy traffic with frequent stops the savings could increase to as much as 10 per cent.

When the engine shuts down, the electronic control unit immediately prepares the engine’s systems for an instant restart. An integrated system of sensors is then used to detect when the driver performs an action that signals the intent to drive off, such as pressing the accelerator or clutch pedal.

As soon as the driver prepares to move away, the engine starts quietly and almost instantly; it only takes the system around 0.3sec to fire up the engine. The process is near imperceptible, and happens before gear selection is completed.

To support the increased number of engine starts, the starter motor is upgraded with a high performance electric motor and a stronger pinion-engagement mechanism with reduced noise levels.

Advanced battery technology is required to ensure the main vehicle battery copes with the frequent charge-discharge cycles common with stop-start operation.

The new Focus ECOnetic also uses advanced technologies to ensure that the battery is kept charged in the most efficient way.

A Smart Regenerative Charging system increases the alternator output when the vehicle brakes or decelerates. This converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electric energy without having to use additional fuel.

The ‘free’ electric current is used to recharge the battery, so that it can be used by the electrical systems at a later stage. This could be when the engine is switched off during a stop-phase, but can also be when the generator is operating in a less efficient mode.

The battery has an advanced management system that continually monitors its status and communicates with the Ford Auto-Start-Stop system, so that the regenerative charging feature can charge the battery in the optimal way. The start-stop system knows how much battery charge is available, so that it can leave the engine running if the battery does not have a sufficient level of charge.

The Low Tension FEAD (Front End Accessory Drive) technology is an innovative solution to reduce potential sources of friction.

A newly designed alternator bracket and new belt pulley design enable the tension of the front end accessory drive belt to be lowered without causing issues that are normally related to drive belt slackness such as increased wear of the belt itself or the alternator bearings, as well as raised noise levels. With the belt at a lower tension, friction in the entire system is reduced and less friction leads to reduced fuel consumption.

The Ford Duratorq TDCi engine technology has also been improved, with new injectors, while the intake system has been revised and the exhaust system fitted with an oxygen sensor. The engine management system has been recalibrated and a standard coated Diesel Particulate Filter (cDPF) added. No additives are required for the filtering process.

The gear ratios of the Ford Durashift five-speed manual gearbox have also been revised, offering a longer ratio for third, fourth and fifth gears – bringing down engine revs and engine noise.

The new Ford Eco Mode system monitors major parameters relevant for optimal fuel consumption that can actively be influenced by altering driving behaviour. These parameters include gear shifting, anticipation (driving as consistently and smoothly as possible) and motorway driving (driving with the most efficient speed on motorways and country roads). In addition the system considers the percentage of cold-engine short trips.

As a result of this monitoring process, Ford Eco Mode generates a driver profile with a scoring scheme for these driving parameters, and offers information on how to improve fuel economy over time. This ongoing process can be translated into driver advice that can help make the best of the vehicle’s technology.

The new technologies added to the second generation Ford Focus ECOnetic complement and add to the original model’s fuel-saving features.

To improve aerodynamics, the Focus ECOnetic is lowered by 10mm at the front and 8mm at the rear, while the outer areas of the lower grille are fitted with blanking plates on the inside surface which contribute to the vehicle’s favourable cd (coefficient of drag) of 0.31. The car takes full advantage of latest generation Michelin Energy Saver 195/65R15 tyres to lower rolling resistance.

A further measure to reduce friction continued from the original Focus ECOnetic is the use of low-viscosity transmission oil developed by Ford’s energy partner BP. The benefits of using this oil on Focus ECOnetic were immediately clear, so Ford subsequently introduced it as the standard transmission oil for all of the company’s core C- and CD-segment passenger cars fitted with manual transmission and dual-mass flywheel.

The reduction in energy consumption is combined with the efficiency of the Focus EHPAS (Electro-Hydraulic Power Assisted Steering) system and underlines the fact that minor changes can produce a major fuel consumption benefit. By re-calibrating the no-load performance of the electric servo pump, energy consumption was reduced sufficiently to provide a noticeable reduction in fuel consumption.

Ford Accelerated Action Days: Ford Volunteers Help the Environment and the Community

Manufacturing new cars and trucks is not the only thing Ford makes; they are also neck deep in mud, sweat, sustainability and volunteerism. What exactly are the dirty dealings that Ford has its hands and feet in, you ask?

It’s called Ford Accelerated Action Days and one of the more notable initiatives that an automotive company has done to improve a metropolitan’s environment and water conservation as well as helping community organizations. The Ford Volunteer Corps were en masse on May 14, 2010 as volunteers in three dozen locations helped turn industrial eye-sores into beautiful nature trails, gardens and rehabilitate a wildlife refuge in Detroit, Michigan and other areas. Volunteers also created systems for water conservation with installation of rain collection and storm water filtering systems.

The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge made immense strides in establishing a refuge from Dearborn to the Ohio state line and could not have done it without the help of the Ford Motor Group. Ford supports several efforts in sustainability and environmental initiatives not only in their vehicles, but also within their manufacturing plants by reducing water usage and they continue to seek other ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

However, May 14, was only the second of five Accelerated Action Days. Each action day has a different focus. For example Ford volunteers worked on helping the homeless in the greater Detroit area as well as donating supplies to help Haiti. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a wealthy area or a poor country, Ford’s Action Days meets the needs of its community as well as those across the world.

March 4, 2010, was an earmark for helping families and children in need both in Detroit and through the World Medical Relief fund for Haiti’s families. Volunteers collected personal hygiene items, packed them in kits delivered them to the places that needed them the most in Southeastern Michigan. More volunteers put together needed medical supplies for the victims of Haiti’s devastating earthquake that occurred on January 12, 2010. Many organizations are collecting and donating supplies and food, and Ford wanted its employees, 200 of them in fact, to take part in the volunteering as well.

The Ford Motor Group encourages its employees to volunteer two work days every year and give back to their local community. In 2008, over 20,000 salaried employees as well as retirees volunteered 100,000 hours on community service projects, which was equal to million of corporate contributions. In 2009 at one of the Ford’s action days, Ford volunteers helped brighten lives at veterans facilities in Southeast Michigan by repairing and painting various areas. Jim Vella, President of Ford Motor Company Fund said, “Ford Motor Company has always been a strong supporter of America’s armed forces and the people who serve…”

Notably, the following received mini-grants of ,000 from Ford in 2009 to buy supplies to complete the needed projects:

Gleaners Community Food Bank in Detroit – volunteers will put together food packs for needy veterans.
VA Hospital of Ann Arbor – Ford volunteers serve meals to veterans and their families on Veteran’s Day as well as distribute duffle bags to veterans for their belongings.
VA Hospital of Detroit – volunteer teams serve meals to veterans and families during Veteran’s Day activities and also assist with in-house patient transportation. Other funds will help buy holiday decorations.

The next Ford Accelerated Action Day is coming up in just a couple of months, September 10, 2010. The theme is “Community Building” and will coincide with Ford’s Global Week of Caring, which is a week dedicated to helping people across six continents to volunteer in a wide range of activities. The Action Day in November will focus on helping veterans and military families, and the fifth community volunteer day will occur in December to assist feeding the hungry.

Ford Mustang History

The birth of the Ford Mustang also saw the birth of the phrase ‘pony car’ which is a term used to describe an American car that is both sporty and affordable. Most Pony cars are epitomized by their inexpensiveness, small compact size and over powered engines.

In the late 1950′s Ford saw sales of its 2 seat Thunderbird decline and in 1958 introduced a new larger 4 seater version which after its introduction in 1958 was incredibly successful.

The competition between Ford and Chevrolet has always been fierce with both large companies trying to appeal to similar markets. This lead to the introduction of the Chevrlet Corvair in 1960 that was the catalyst that forced Ford to create the Thunderbird’s successor which was called the Futura and Futura Sprint. The competition lead the other manufacturer to follow Ford’s example with Plymouth introducing the Valient Signet and Dodge creating the Dart GT and it wasn’t long before Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Buick joined the competition.

All of these cars were a commercial success but some top auto executives including Ford’s Lee Iacocca believe that there was a bigger market that they could capture. They saw that there was a niche market of younger car buys with a disposable income looking to purchase affordable cars with a more sporty image.

This lead to the creation of the Ford Mustang in 1964 which proved to be an enormous success. Ford initially forecasted sales of just a mear 100, 000 but orders totalled 22,000 in the first day alone. By the end of that year sales had reached a staggering 618,812 units.

The Ford Mustang became the car that all the other manufacturers wanted to emulate and lead to the new phrase ‘pony car’ being adopted. The term was first used by Dennis Shattuck who was the editor at Car Life magazine around that time and created it based on the equestrian sounding Ford Mustang.

The Ford Mustang is one of Ford’s oldest running names together with the F-Series and the Falcon which is still in production in Australia. Over the years there have been 5 generations of Mustang with the 1970′s seeing a diversion from the lightweight original Mustang urging fans of the early 1964 design to force Ford to go back to its 1960′s roots.

First Generation

The first generation of Mustang was created under the watchful gaze of Ford’s Lee Iacocca and chief engineer Donald N. Frey and took 18 months. The original prototype saw the car having a mid-mounted V4 engine and only 2 seats but this was abandoned in favour of a 4 seater 2+2 design due to the low sales figures of the Ford Thunderbird. The 2+2 design was believed to have been chosen due to the success of cars like the Jaguar E-Type.

The new body design was created by Joe Oros which produced a winning design in a competition introduced by Iacocca.

“I told the team that I wanted the car to appeal to women, but I wanted men to desire it, too. I wanted a Ferrari-like front end, the motif centered on the front – something heavy-looking like a Maserati, but, please, not a trident – and I wanted air intakes on the side to cool the rear brakes. I said it should be as sporty as possible and look like it was related to European design.” –Oros

In order to keep the costs of development to a minimum the car was based on components from cars already in production such as the Ford Fairline and Ford Falcon.

Second Generation

The second generation of the Mustang was fuelled by the energy crisis in 1973 which caused the large petrol thirsty earlier cars to fall out of favour due to the rise in fuel costs.

The new smaller Mustang II was released in 1973 and Ford goal was to compete against the small Japanese imports such as Toyota Celica. However the final car was much heavier than its early counterpart adversely affecting the performance.

Third Generation

In 1979 the third generation of Mustang was introduced relying heavily on the Japanese market for its design. The car was designed to be more accommodating to 4-passengers, the trunk size was increased and the engine bay was enlarged to make maintenance easier.

Fourth Generation

In 1994 the Third Generation Mustang underwent a major restyling taking cues from the original 1964 design and for the first time since 1973 the hatchback version would no longer be available.

The original engine was a 3.8 OHV V6 rated at 145 bhp but over the years this was upgraded to a 4.6L V8 producing a massive 225 bhp by 1998.

Fifth Generation

2005 saw the introduction of a completely redesigned Mustang based on Fords new D2C platform. The body took a lot of detailing from the earlier 60′s Mustangs which Ford’s Vice President of design termed “retro-futurism”.

FORD TO LAUNCH EIGHT NEW VEHICLES IN INDIA BY MID DECADE

Ford Motor Company will launch eight new vehicles in India by the middle of the decade as it moves to rapidly expand its presence in the fast growing Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford Asia Pacific and Africa (APA), made the announcement today during a keynote speech titled “Managing Growth – Evolving Market Dynamics” at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Conference in New Delhi.

“We have big plans for India and for this region,” Hinrichs said. “As we have seen from the spectacular early success of the Ford Figo, more and more Indian consumers appreciate the fuel efficient, economical, high quality, safe, and fun-to-drive vehicles that Ford offers. By the middle of this decade we will introduce eight new vehicles to India from our global platforms, in segments appropriate for this market. This is part of our „better plan‟ to bring more and more vehicles from our vast global portfolio to India and other markets in Asia Pacific and Africa.”

“Although the vast majority of vehicles we produce in India will help satisfy growing local demand, we also continue to pursue export opportunities,” said Michael Boneham, president and managing director, Ford India. “We are pleased to announce that Ford India will export our locally-produced, hot-selling Ford Figo to 50 new markets, including Mexico, North Africa and the Middle East starting next year.”

Ford has been exporting the Figo to South Africa since May 2010. Ford India also exports the Ford Fiesta (branded as the “Ikon”) and diesel powertrains to South Africa, as well as 1.4- and 1.6-litre petrol engines to Thailand. Ford sells the Endeavor, Ikon, Fiesta and Figo in India, all locally-produced. The launch and export of both Figo and the engines are the result of a USD 500-million investment in India to expand manufacturing and set up an engine plant there.

Ford‟s APA region encompasses markets on three continents, including Australia, China, India, Thailand and South Africa. Industry sales in the region will increase from 16 million units in 2009, to an estimated 35 million units by 2018. The region is expected to account for nearly 70 percent of Ford‟s worldwide growth in the next decade.

New Ford Focus ST at Geneva Motor show

The Ford Focus is a small family car manufactured by Ford first in Europe starting July 1998, then worldwide starting February 2000 (with its own model for North America in production until late 2010). A second generation launched in Europe in January 2005, received styling and engineering updates in January 2008, and is marketed globally outside North and South America. The third generation model will be sold globally upon its launch, first in Europe (late 2010) then in the Americas (early 2011).

In 2012, Ford will offer a new performance-oriented Focus ST. It will be introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the preview being displayed at the Geneva motor Show on January 2010. The exciting new next-generation Ford Focus range was the star attraction in Ford Motor Company’s display at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Unveiled as a world car at the 2010 North American International Auto Show, the new Ford Focus ST was easily one of the biggest launches in Detroit too.

The ST features a new, more aggressive exterior design, including a redesigned front bumper with larger air intakes and grille, larger rear wing, wider side sills, center exit exhaust, and alloy wheels. Inside, the car receives a trio of additional gauges mounted in the dashboard, faux-carbon fiber trim, and sport seats with body colored inserts and stitching. The ST will use a 247 hp (184 kW) version of the 2.0L EcoBoost engine, a gain of 25 hp above the current Focus ST with a 2.5L 5-cylinder engine.

The formal launch of the full production-ready Focus range is highly significant for Ford, as it signals the introduction of the first truly global product developed under the Company’s ONE Ford strategy.

The Focus is Ford’s most significant car range globally.  Developed at Ford’s global centre of excellence for Small and Medium Cars in Germany for sale in over 120 markets worldwide, the next-generation model is the most important Focus yet and is created from Ford Motor Company’s new global C segment platform with up to 80 per cent parts commonality around the world.  This platform will underpin at least ten vehicles globally and account for two million units of annual production by 2012.

At the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, Ford Motor Company’s group vice president for Global Product Development, Derrick Kuzak, promised that an exciting new performance version of the next generation Ford Focus was in development.

At Paris, Ford is delivering on that promise by revealing an early preview model of the exciting next-generation Ford Focus ST. Targeted for launch in all global markets from early 2012, the all-new Ford Focus ST will be Ford’s first high-performance model developed under its global Performance Vehicles strategy.

The new range-topping Focus – which features a unique 250PS version of the new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder Ford EcoBoost engine – will be completely true to Ford’s ST heritage, offering driving enthusiasts an intoxicating cocktail of exhilarating performance and handling accompanied by an addictive sound. Enthusiasts found it striking and sporty and there’s for sure a few Korean influences in the exterior, with shades of Kia Ceed in the car’s nose for instance. It’s nonetheless a captivating design, with especially striking rear lamps shaped like a runny egg melting down the Focus’s flanks. The front end, too, is influenced by Fiesta but strikes out the next iteration of Ford’s family face.

Overall, the new Ford Focus ST will be a success for sure, which people already previewed at the Geneva Motor Show 2010.

New Ford Fiesta 2011 to be unveiled at SEMA Auto Show

A well renowned company Ford is soon going to display around eight Ford Fiesta models in the awaited 2010 SEMA Auto show. Presentation of the Ford models would range from 350hp ‘extreme’, being the showstopper, built by the Ford Racing Performance Parts to ‘digital’ Fiesta with circuit board graphics.
