Finding out more about the best gas mileage SUVs

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

SUV fuel economy is not exactly legendary. A matter of fact, SUVs are known far and wide as some of the biggest gas guzzlers that are.  So when one of my friends announced that he was looking for the best gas mileage SUV rating, I was a little bit surprised. It didn’t really make any sense. If you’re going to buy an SUV, you giving the world a certain message: luxury matters to me much more than efficiency. Of course there are certain SUV companies such as Subaru which specifically market to hippies and other supposedly environmentally conscious folks, but even these are not known for being tremendously energy-efficient. Still, I was intrigued. I wanted to find out more about the best gas mileage SUVs.

The real problem is that the category SUV is pretty flexible. Although they are supposed to be rugged vehicles equipped for off-road driving, the reality is much different. Many of them are simply status symbols for people who like to show off. They are roomy inside, high above the ground, and big enough so that if they get in crashes, the other car takes the worst of it. That isn’t to say that SUVs are safe. Even the best gas mileage SUV won’t save you from a rollover crash, and that can be fatal. Nowadays, many of the design flaws inherent in sport utility vehicles are being corrected, but I still wouldn’t trust one with my life without doing a lot of research.

The biggest problem with this project, of course, was coming up with a definition for what an SUV is. A car like the Saturn Outlook, for example, might be considered an SUV but might not. Would a crossover car qualify for the best gas mileage SUV? It is pretty hard to tell, and my friend couldn’t decide.

In a lot of ways his whole project was a waste of time. It did have one good effect, however. Researching the best gas mileage SUV really got him thinking. For the amount of money that he could spend buying a new SUV, he could get something that was really fuel-efficient such as a Honda hybrid car. He came to realize that he didn’t really need an SUV. He didn’t have much to carry around, and he didn’t go off-road very often. Instead, he invested his money in a fuel-efficient car. It might not be as big and overbearing, but it is a better investment in the long term.

Why 4WD Ute Enthusiasts Also Like Compact SUVs

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

These days, two of the most popular kinds of vehicles in Australia are the four wheel drive coupe utility, or the 4WD ute, and the compact SUV. Four wheel drive utes are extremely popular due to the combination of car styling and truck hauling they provide their owners.

Australians are a rugged bunch, yet they also enjoy their luxuries. The ability to drive around in a two dour coupe cabin without having to say goodbye to the cargo bed stashed behind the cabin is one that many Australians enjoy, and for good reason: you can drive with your partner in the front while having your groceries or other supplies in the back. That convenience is hard to get through other vehicular designs.

However, at the same time, another popular vehicle design in Australia is the compact SUV, and although the link between both kinds of vehicles may not seem apparent from a cursory glance, it makes sense when you give a bit of thought to it. This article will discuss why 4WD ute enthusiasts are also likely to be fond of the venerable compact SUV throughout Australia.

Perhaps the first reason why fans of 4WD Utes are also often drawn to compact SUVs is because it is possible to do a good amount of hauling with a compact SUV. While a compact SUV may not have as much raw storage space in the back as a good old four wheel drive ute, you can still store a good amount under the rear lift, and if you are willing to lower the seats, you can fit much larger things there in the back.

]]>

Another reason people who drive 4WD Utes may consider the compact SUV is because it also offers the same passenger vehicle derived platform, which translates into a smoother ride when bucking around town. No matter how rugged the average Australian is, at the end of the day, most people enjoy having a comfortable drive home or to work, or to wherever else they might be off to.

Having a vehicle based on a car frame simply makes the experience of driving a more comfortable one. You get this with a 4WD ute if it is based on a car frame, and since the majority of compact SUVs are also based on car frames, you get that car comfort with them too. Over a few miles, it may not make a difference to have a comfortable ride, but if you ever plan on heading out of town, you will appreciate not being bounced around in your seat very quickly.

A third reason why people who are fond of the four wheel drive ute design may also feel the same for the compact SUV design is because both kinds of vehicles stand out when you’re making your way through city traffic. Of course, looks aren’t everything, but they do count for something. If you’re trying to make an impression on your date, your partner, your friends, or your business buddies, it can help to have a vehicle that isn’t just the same minivan or compact car everyone else is driving.

One way to get that bit of a distinguishing marker, of course, is to drive the classic 4WD ute, and this is the approach a number of Australians have taken over the years. However, another approach that is increasingly being used among Australians is to drive the compact SUV. It isn’t nearly as bulky as the full sized SUV and it doesn’t require nearly as much work to parallel park or money to fill up with petrol, but it still sets you apart just by driving it. It is for all of these reasons that 4WD ute enthusiasts have much to appreciate in the compact SUV.

Why SUVs Are Popular

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

Most people nowadays want to carpool and take the entire family in style.  It seems like no matter where a person goes he or she needs a large number of people to tag along. Instead of it being one couple going to prom together it is two or more couples, when showing up at an event people want multiple couples to arrive together, families want to take everybody and minivans are not a cool car.  This is the main reason why so many people have turned to the popular 7 Passenger SUV’s.

Since people wanted to arrive and leave together they decided that they needed more seats available in the vehicle. This meant that there had to be some vehicle that would have enough seats. Therefore, people started turning to 7 Passenger minivans to suit their desires. However, when car manufactures started making five seater SUVs they realized they could add an extra row of seats in the back of the large SUVs and fit 7 or even 8 people.  This was perfect for the car manufactures because they could make nearly ,000 in profit on SUVs verses hardly any on a regular car.  Because of the SUV profit margins almost every car manufacture started creating them and offered many different models from small to large.

When the 7 and 8 passenger SUVs started rolling out it allowed people that wanted or needed to carry around 6,7, or even 8 people to do so and not have to drive a boring minivan around. This is when the 7 Passenger SUV’s have become one of the most popular vehicles in the late 1990s and 2000s. Also, some SUVs are four wheel drive and can move very well in mud or snowing conditions where a typical minivan could not.

It does not matter if people are going to a wedding, a funeral, prom, an event, or any other occasion they all seem to want those gorgeous 7 Passenger SUV’s instead of mom’s minivan. These SUV’s are suitable for basically any occasion, look great, and seat enough people for a person to feel right at home while riding in them. When it is all put together it shows why so many people are wrapped around the mufflers of the new 7 Passenger SUV’s.
On top of all of these features the 7 Passenger SUV’s come in many different designs, manufactures and of course colors. This is yet another one of the many various reasons why people have made the 7 Passenger SUV’s so popular. People are riding around in a vehicle that is colored just right, from their favorite car maker, seats most of their friends, and are suited to any occasion that may come about. Therefore, people prefer this type of vehicle over any of the typical vans or minivans.

How a Compact SUV Can Also Be a Luxury SUV

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

The compact SUV has become more popular than ever in recent years in Australia as drivers seek sport utility vehicles that can haul, tow, and travel off road, yet get better mileage from each litre of petrol than their larger brethren. In recent years, there has also been an increased desire among Australians to purchase luxury vehicles capable of getting them from one place to another in quiet, comfort, and style. As a result, both the compact SUV market and luxury vehicle markets are booming. However, a number of drivers mistakenly think that they have to choose between the two kinds of vehicles; they are not aware that it is possible to have both in the same vehicle. It is possible for a compact SUV to also provide as much luxury as a person could desire.

Perhaps the first step to turning a compact SUV into a luxury SUV without losing its SUV sensibilities is to make sure you are starting from a solid foundation. This means starting from an SUV with a unibody design, as this will be more resistant to flex and will provide you with a smoother and more stable ride. You will also want to make sure your SUV is derived from either a small family car platform or from a compact car. The vehicle or frame from which your compact SUV is derived will have a significant impact on the comfort of the ride; compact SUVs that are truck based tend to have harsher and less forgiving rides, which are not very compatible with the idea of luxury.

Once you have some of the basics taken care of, the next steps are to think about the features you would like to have for comfort, style, and quiet. These, of course, are the factors that make your compact SUV more than a compact SUV, but a luxury SUV as well. For example, some drivers are particularly interested in sound deadening, as if you have a noisy vehicle, it is hard to think of it as a luxury ride. When all you hear is the noise of the highway and your engine and your tires and every gust of wind as you drive down the road, luxury will be the last thing on your mind. On the other hand, when you have an SUV that is quiet on the inside and smooth on the outside, then you can soon come to forget you are even driving in an SUV. This is what it means to have luxury.

Similarly, you will want to determine how important other features are for you, such as an automatic transmission instead of a standard, or third row seating. You might also want to look into features like sun roofs and moon roofs, as well as heated seats or leather seats. These are the small things that make all the difference when trying to find luxury within a compact SUV.

On cold days, having those heated seats can really make a difference. When it comes to driving, you will also want to look for things like power adjustable seats and mirrors, as that kind of extra comfort can really make the drive to work a more bearable ordeal. If you can find heated mirrors and rear wind shield wipers, you will also increase your chances of enjoying your drive. Keep in mind, however, that you do not have to have all of these features built into whatever you are searching for in order for you to drive in luxury. What is important is to decide which features you need and find a company that can provide them.

Study discovers automobiles growing to be less secure than SUVs

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

A new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that SUVs are some of the safest cars that individuals can possibly get. Modern SUVs are so much safer than the roll-prone, top-heavy models of years past, thanks to electronic stability controls. Source for this article – Study finds SUVs safer than smaller cars in auto accidents by Car Deal Expert.

Most unsafe automobile is the Nissan 350Z

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently released a study concerning collision safety, as reported by USA Today, and the findings show some vehicles are getting safer. When it comes to safety, some classes of automobiles are better than others. The rates of death vary quite a bit between automobiles though. Crash data was measured in death per million. That means the number of deaths that happened for every million automobiles made in a certain number of model years. For every million model years registered, there were 143 fatalities in the Nissan 350Z. That means it was the most dangerous of vehicles. The IIHS report wasn’t all bad. The death rates were shown to be going down. The death rate was 48 per million from 2005 to 2008 which went down from 2002 to 2005 to 79.

]]>

Safety from electronics

SUVs are growing to be a less dangerous vehicle class, since the launch of electronic stability controls, or ESC. The death rate dropped from 82 per million to 28 per million. That was the rate from 1999 to 2002 before the 2002 to 2005 rate. Recently, ESC became much more common in SUVs. As of 2012, it will be required in all automobiles, Automobile magazine explains. The death rates also have three types of accidents they are listed by. Multi-vehicle, single vehicle and single vehicle rollovers are the types. The safest class included minivans. There were only 25 fatalities per million, and they were mostly multi-vehicle accidents. SUVs, from little to full size, had fewer deaths per million in automobiles with four-wheel drive. Pickup trucks had an overall rate of 52 deaths per million, though trucks with four-wheel drive had lower rates of fatality than those without. Single automobile accidents were where the highest truck death rate occurred.

Vehicles are typically dangerous

Vehicles had the highest death rates, with an overall rate of 56 fatalities per million, mostly from multi-vehicle collisions. Little four-door cars, mini and mid-size sports cars had the highest rates, with death rates of 82, 83 and 80 deaths per million, respectively. The lowest death rate was in large luxury cars. There were 24 per million deaths with them. Foreign automobiles were among the most dependable. The Ford Edge SUV was the only American vehicle in the seven vehicles that had a zero death rate. The other six were the Land Rover Range Rover Sport and LR3, the Nissan Motors Armada, the Audi A6 four-door 4WD, Mercedes E Class four-door 4WD and the Toyota Sienna. The vehicles with the highest death rates besides the Nissan Motors 350Z with 143 deaths per million, were the Nissan Motors Titan crew cab with 126, Chevrolet Aveo with 119 and Chevy Cobalt with 117.

What Makes A SUV Stand Out Of The Crowd?

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

As everybody knows a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is the latest development in the automobile line. It is an improvement from the passenger car, but is short of a truck considering its uses. It emulates the features of a station wagon, which was widely in use by families both for carrying passengers and cargo at a time, and still looking like a car in every way.

For purpose of towing capacity as the truck, SUVs mostly have 4 wheel drive and are built on light-truck chassis. Mainly the idea is to make the SUV a sturdy vehicle, to drive on “off-road” conditions, even on rugged country roads and hilly areas. SUVs have come a long way from the roaring popularity during later part of 1990s and early 2000s. The designs have been continuously refined for purposes of luxuries that a car can offer and fuel efficiency to be far better than the years of its introduction.

Arising out of consumer comfort reviews, the old model 2 door SUVs have become 4 door models mostly. Thus more space for passengers, with at least three rows of seating in a full size or mid-size SUV has been provided. It shares the space for engine compartment, passenger and combined cargo compartment using the boxy body. The higher ground clearance makes driving comfortable in climates of snow fall.

]]>

With this intro, if you analyze what makes a SUV stand out of the crowd, to win the honor of Best SUV 2011, you have to take into account the following criteria:

Generally with the weight and built-up, SUVs often lag behind in respect of fuel efficiency. Yet there are models that are designed to give the best fuel economy in standard road conditions of cities. So for the people who wish to make use of their SUV – in the category of compact and small SUV models – within the city roads, the competition between vehicles is somewhat tough.

According to the detailed ratings given by automobile experts, many brands are in the fray. Each one of them stakes their claim, touting various qualifications for the recognition. Although you can see the ratings differ according to the reviews online, the main brands on competition are – Dodge Caliber; Mazda SUV; Honda SUV; Toyota SUV and Honda CR-V Crossover.

Of the above, if you apply the yard-sticks of satisfaction of the whole family for a car, advanced and sophisticated features, easy handling, beautiful outlook and excellent fuel efficiency, the one winning the majority votes for Best Small SUV for 2011 will be Honda CR-V Crossover. The price tag of somewhere below ,000 also justifies the selection.

Similarly in the luxury SUV category, after due evaluation of Porsche, Audi and Infiniti QX 56 applying the same qualifications, the third one is the pick to be adjudged as Best Luxury SUV for 2011.

Coming to selection of Best Hybrid SUV 2011, one has to take into consideration the full size SUVs of the latest Hybrid Vehicles generation. Hybrid vehicles are large and use both fuel and electric power transmission while on the road. After studying the evaluation reviews of experts, the award by popular votes goes to GMC Yukon Hybrid.

With best features of 8 cylinder power, of which 4 can be shut down when not needed while running, two electric motors, 300 volt battery, 6,000 pounds towing capacity, space to accommodate a crowd of people and such other qualities like superb fuel economy, make it stand out of the crowd.

Good SUVs with 3rd Row Seating

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

When people want to have spacious ride with sleek design and great comfort, they immediately think about midsize SUV. In the past, they might only think about mini van, but such car doesn’t provide any sleek style; it only provides spacious room for the passengers. But if people really want to have comfortable ride, with spacious design, great style, and plush convenience, they can always find reliable SUVs with 3rd row seating.

Reasons to Choose SUVs with 3rd Row Seating

There’re many reasons why people should choose such ride. First of all, the third row seating provides additional seating management, so people can always carry more passengers and also cargo. The space within each row is also spacious. There is enough leg room space to relax and sit comfortably. Lots of cars with the third row seating arrangements have foldable third row seating, so there will be roomy and plush rooms on the rear side of the car for passenger or cargo. When the seats aren’t used, the rear room can be used as compartment area. Second, there’re many types of midsize SUVs available in affordable price as well as stylish design. Long gone the slow and sluggish impression of family ride. Who says family cars need to be slow and creeping? These cars can also be fast and speedy, as long as the drivers stay within the driving range limit. Third, lots of these cars are designed with environmentally safe considerations. A good example of reliable family car with third row seating is the SUV Outlander from Mitsubishi which provides great outlook style as well as comfortable and spacious interior room. The same comfort can also be achieved from Toyota 4-Runner. The overall look is charming, stylish, and also comfortable. Since the car’s body frame is designed as family ride, it’s strong enough to contain lots of passengers. Hybrid design is also very common for midsize SUV, especially with Toyota Highlander as the perfect example. The car is also set up with special features, such as good mileage and fuel efficient system.

The newest SUVs are available in three different designs of compact, midsize, and full size model. People are free to choose whatever size and design they like, based on their needs and their wants. If they want to choose the best rides for their family, they need to consider several important things. It’s also advisable to compare one SUV with others, just to get clearer ideas of the price and the best features of each SUV.

Finding the Right Used Car for Your Needs

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

When browsing a car dealership’s inventory, one has to know basic automobile terminologies for easier automobile identification. Most used car dealerships have a wide collection of different automobiles. A prospective owner who knows certain terminologies may find what he wants faster without going through elaborate descriptions the dealer has to decipher.

Sedans usually make up the majority of items in the car dealership’s inventory because these tend to be the most popular car body style among car owners. The sedan has an efficient performance, and it is a space saver. It is suitable for the city where small families live nowadays. The hatchback is a variant of the sedan that has a third (or fifth) door called a “hatch” or liftgate which allows access to the trunk.

Sport utility vehicles or SUVs are another popular automobile among car owners because of its large towing capacity (rivals that of a light truck) and passenger space. This is suitable for growing families because its sturdy build is ideal for protecting young passengers and their older companions. Some SUVs are four-wheel drives, meaning their rear and front wheels can be maneuvered. Some SUVs are also capable of off-road travel.

]]>

Crossover SUVs are also present in many dealerships with inventories of used car Edmonton has to offer. These are barely distinguishable from SUVs because of their very similar appearance. Basically, crossovers automobiles are built by integrating some features found in two car platforms. Most crossovers are SUVs with features of a station wagon (which has bigger passenger capacity in the back) or a minivan (with passenger seats facing forward rather than sideward).

Pickup trucks are not very popular among the inventories of used cars Edmonton dealerships have although these vehicles attract people who like to travel a lot. Traditional pickup trucks generally have a single row of seats for the driver and about two for passengers. Nowadays, there are four-door pickup trucks that have about the same passenger capacity as an SUV. This feature makes pickup trucks popular among growing families.

The minivan is apt for rather large families, and there are several of these among used cars Edmonton dealers offer. This is distinguishable from the SUV by its rather square bulk and seats that all face forward. Most minivans have a sliding door on one side although there are variants with hinge doors similar to an SUV or a pickup.

Suv + Sedan = Chrysler Pacifica

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

What car would you choose if you wanted a car which can carry as many passengers as an SUV but would come with the looks and performance of a sedan? Before you have to make a difficult choice between the two, the hardworking people at Chrysler have given us the solution – in the form of the Chrysler Pacifica. The new addition to the line of automobiles the company has been producing since its birth, this car combines the positive aspects of an SUV and a sedan. This sport tourer is something so innovative that it is in a class of its own.

For starters just like an SUV, it can seat up to 6 adults which, compared to some SUVs, is a great feat. While some SUVs’ third row seats are not tailored for adult occupants and best left to children, the Pacifica’s third row seat has a bit more leg room. The only drawback, and a very small one at that, is that since the seats are elevated it is best to leave those seats for people below 5’7”. In addition to that the car has fold-flat second and third row seats akin to some SUVs and minivans thus giving the user much more luggage space.

The Pacifica may have the traits and luggage capacity of an SUV or a minivan but outward appearance says otherwise. It is considerably lower than the usual SUV, yet just a tad taller than a car, showing just how one-of-a-kind this car is. The entire design of the Pacifica gives an aura of uniqueness. Something that looks like nothing you have ever seen before in any type of automobile. The contours and the design of the body speak for itself.

]]>

The power of this so called sport tourer comes from a 3.5 liter single overhead cam V6 engine capable of coughing out up to 250 horsepower at 6400 revs per minute and 250 lb. ft. of torque at 3950 rpm. All these power find its way to the wheels through high quality Chrysler parts and the standard AutoStick 4 speed automatic transmission that also allows manual shifting. While the automatic transmission is precise and is in itself a perfect piece of engineering, manual shifting is incorporated for those who wanted to take control of the gear shifting. The design of the Pacifica and the 250 horses inside its V6 can get the sport tourer from 0-60 in 9 seconds, a decent acceleration for a car that can sit up to 6 adults and still with room to spare.

What keeps those 6 adults comfortable on their seats during even long drives is the magnificent suspension system of the vehicle. With a fully-independent suspension for both the front and rear, the Pacifica employs MacPherson struts on the front and multi-link system in the rear. This keeps the car stable and adds to the overall comfort of the passengers and drivers against road irregularities. In addition to that, the car is an all wheel drive giving the car more traction even on rainy days thus increasing the safety of its occupants. With a five star rating for both front and side collision tests, users can have peace of mind knowing that the car they are in is a safe one.

With a car such as this, users can have the best of both worlds. They will have on their command the large storage space and seating capacity of an SUV and a minivan. And the low coefficient of drag is due to the vehicle’s design which looks more like a sedan.

SUV Tires To Drive Your Car

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

SUV tires are used in the SUV vehicles or in the light trucks than the passenger cars. If you are carrying lots of load in the vehicle SUV tires are the best option for your vehicle. These tires work well than the other tires in the rain, snow, mud and in all kinds of terrain. The SUV tires can be of two types-one that are used in the hot roads in the summer and another that can be used in the salty roads in the winter season. You need to find the right tire according to your driving needs.

The SUV tires are mainly used in the multi purposed vehicles and when it comes to the wheels of SUV tires, chrome wheels are the best option. Another kind of wheel that fits with the needs of SUV tire, are the tuner wheels. So, buying of SUV tires is different from the buying of the tires that are used in regular vehicles. You need to know the uses of the SUV tires before buying one.

]]>

Buy the best suitable tires for your car according to its uses. SUV tires are mainly needed for the heavy vehicles. If you use them in any light weighed vehicle, the tires can be damaged and can prove to be dangerous for your car.
SUV tires are best for using in the construction areas and it can endure different weight and pressure
SUV tires are best used in the off-road vehicles, as these tires have deeper treads than the standard car tires. The other reason of using SUV tires in the off-road vehicle is that they are directional and they don’t get jammed while driving in the snow or mud.
Check the tire’s size like whether it is standard or over sized, and the plys of the tire as well –  whether it is 6 ply or 4 ply before buying the tires.
SUV tires work best on the backroads and in the dry creekbeds. The tires are also very noisy.

The chrome wheels and the tuner wheels fit best with the SUV tires because of their highly loaded capacity. But the problem with the chrome wheels and the tuner wheels is that the wheels can be damaged and corroded in the winter season while driving on the salt spread. You can use wheel skins, in your car tires to avoid damages of this kind.

Best Used 2007 SUVs

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

Making a decision regarding which are the best used 2007 SUVs is more than just a little subjective. The make and model of SUV that is best for you may not be the best for the next consumer. Still, there are some factors that are universal – no matter what used vehicle you’re considering. One, you want to know that the vehicle is in the best condition so you have it thoroughly inspected by a professional mechanic. Two, you verify the vehicle history by obtaining a report. Three, the vehicle has to meet most of your needs – and fit your budget.

Automotive sources publish reports of the best used vehicles. Consumer Reports lists its choices in various price range categories in its “Best Used Vehicles for Under ,000.” Edmunds has its “2010 Used Car Best Bets” for the best vehicles in various categories covering years 2003-2008. Our picks for best used 2007 SUVs are taken from these two lists – and augmented with comments from other automotive experts.

* Honda CR-V – A double winner, the 2007 Honda CR-V compact crossover SUV appears on both the Edmunds and Consumer Reports lists. That’s certainly not hard to fathom, given Honda’s reputation for quality, reliability, and overall customer satisfaction. This family-friendly SUV is a comfortable vehicle that’s also a good cargo hauler and is very fuel efficient. Edmunds, in detailed comments on the 2007 model, says: “Look past the conservative exterior styling and you’ll find the best-designed small SUV in this price range when it comes to interior aesthetics and day-to-day practicality. Build and materials quality leads the class.”

]]>

* Mitsubishi Outlander – The all-new second-generation 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander compact crossover SUV so impressed Motor Week that editors commented at the time: “Even after adding on the upgrades, the Outlander looks to be the V6 bargain of its compact crossover class. Higher style, more car-like response, and clever features, are efforts in the right direction. Enough so that not only do we think a lot more people will notice the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander, they likely will drive home one as well.”

* Ford Edge – Consumer Reports lists the 2007 Ford Edge midsize crossover SUV in the ,000-,000 price range category of best used SUVs (under ,000), and for good reason. First introduced in 2006, the 2007 model was named one of AAA and Parents magazine’s Best Cars for Families and finished in the top 10 for Motor Trend’s Car of the Year award. Cars.com observes: “The Edge is a comfortable, quick, smooth-riding light SUV with five seats and fresh styling. Even though it’s a crossover, its gas mileage isn’t what it could be and it lacks the third row of seats… On its own merits, though, it’s definitely worthy of consideration for shoppers seeking a midsize SUV.”

* Chevrolet Tahoe – Consumer Guide has consistently awarded the Chevrolet Tahoe, and its sibling GMC Yukon, as Best Buys. For the 2007 model, Consumer Guide observes: “Chevrolet’s redesign of this large SUV addresses the most egregious flaws of its predecessor: sloppy steering and subpar interior appointments. Third-row accommodations are still best suited to children, but for smooth power, utility, and surprising overall refinement, Tahoe is a Best Buy among large SUVs.” Edmunds points to Tahoe’s “roomy cabin that can seat up to nine and fairly nimble handling for such a bulky vehicle.”

The Brief Historical Past Of The SUV

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

Most of us are acquainted with the delivery of the automobile and Henry Ford’s Mannequin “T,” however we often overlook the creation of one of the standard vehicles on the highway: the SUV. As time marches on, so does every thing else and at one point the necessity for a bigger, more rugged vehicle emerged paving the best way for all the SUVs on the highway at this very moment.

Necessity is indeed the mom of invention, or on this case, evolution. Many believe the modern Sport Utility automobile advanced from an automobile identified on the time as a “depot hack” (additionally known as “suburbans” or “carryalls”). Depot hacks have been bigger vehicles that transported individuals (and often numerous baggage) to and from the prepare depots again when the rail line was the way to travel long distances.

As an increasing number of individuals used their automobiles for longer distance driving, and people started to maneuver additional away from family members creating the necessity to drive longer distances extra typically, car producers looked for a method to place themselves in the car market in the Nineteen Twenties and 30s.

Jeep ultimately produced the “Jeep Wagon” which they described in advertising because the “utility car” for the household within the 1940s. And so the term was coined. Jeep continued to develop its SUV line, producing the popular Wagoneer in the early 60s, while Chevy wound up with the official name “Suburban” for certainly one of its models. Within the 60s, when the surf scene and browsing lifestyle became well-liked, wagons started to take off and the ever common “Woody” gained recognition.

]]>

As far as we can inform, these kind of “carryalls” were really the precursor to the modern SUV. Because the baby boom generation grew up and started having youngsters of their very own, the need for sporty automobiles that might haul the entire household plus some started to grow. At that time, the common was 2.7 youngsters per household, an inhabitants that was still rising and as city sprawl began to take maintain, folks found themselves in their autos more typically than ever before. SUVs turned the popular alternative to the stuffy station wagon, with extra power and a sexier style.

The 70s brought high fuel costs causing bigger engines and high performance automobiles like the SUV to wane in sales. Individuals began to gravitate toward gasoline-efficient mini-vans, holding the “carryall”
alive long enough to wait for the 80s to roll around. As the financial system boomed, so did the American need for big, excessive efficiency vehicles again and massive they were. Many SUV producers went to extremes with 10-cylinder engines (the Ford Tour is one). It was about size and power.

That trend, however, lost momentum for a variety of causes during the 1990s and 2000s. SUVs got here under scrutiny for being unsafe both to passengers inside and to smaller automobiles on the road. As urban space began to lower, parking spaces grew to become smaller and behemoth SUVs grew to become less practical for metropolis driving. A new awareness of gasoline-effectivity based not on the economy, but on environmental awareness additionally took place and folks started questioning the possession of such vehicles.

The car trade responded by creating “compact SUVs” and cross-overs. Toyota came out with the smaller “Rav-four” – an SUV with a wheelbase the same size as a car. Isuzu the popular Ascender 5-Passenger. SUVs also turned safer throughout this time with producers together with each passive and energetic safety features.

Most lately, SUVs have tried to jump on the environmentally- and economically-sound bandwagon of electrical powered autos and hybrids, hoping to remain competitive with the newer “green” cars. With SUVs evolving constantly to fulfill the market’s calls for, it would not look like they’ll be going away any time soon.

Choosing a New SUV 4×4 and Getting the Benefits of Four Wheel Drive Cars

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

Sports utility vehicles or better known SUVs can be a good option for those who would prefer to drive a vehicle that will give the optimum power and best performance. People often wish to make a statement with the cars they drive. Bold and masculine, that is the kind of statement that SUVs make. Anyone who has ever driven a SUV will say that they had experienced the best driving experience. Anyone who wants to upgrade his vehicle to a new SUV 4×4 must also know the benefits of a full blown four wheel drive SUV.

While choosing a sports utility vehicle, there a number of things that need to be kept in mind. First of all you have to decide what should be the size of the vehicle. There are small sized and large sized SUVs. Once the type of SUV is decided upon, the budget has to be determined. Whatever the range of the budget, the kinds of SUVs that could be purchased with the fixed budget should be found out through a market survey conducted by oneself. The internet is a good source of information for this comparative study. Now the choice is between two wheel drive and four wheel drive SUVs.

The benefits of choosing a 4WD over a 2WD vehicle are numerous. The vehicles that use all their four wheels at the same time at all times or intermittently are called four wheel drive vehicles. These vehicles mostly have a mode changing control by which the four wheel drive can be converted into two wheel drive whenever required. These vehicles therefore have more powerful engines because all the four wheels power the engines. These vehicles also have a higher profile which lends the driver a superior view of the road on which he is driving. These vehicles are classed in the luxury car segment. The SUVs have a lot of interior space and posh leather seats. These SUVs are mostly hybrid that increases their fuel efficiency and saves petrol. These vehicles are meant to meet the advanced fuel efficiency standards and environmental regulations.

These vehicles are fully automated and most of the car functions are conducted through switches that are designed to be within the easy reach of the driver. This facilitates driving and helps the driver to concentrate better on the road. The stronger and powerful wheels help to leave the main road and drive through fields, difficult mountainous terrain and even quagmire.

Winters are difficult times for all cars but four wheel drive SUVs it is not difficult. The four wheels do not allow the vehicle to skid on the ice or snow because it creates necessary traction. This extra traction does not let the vehicle to get stuck in muddy areas.

These vehicles are generally meant for traveling through long distances therefore driver seats are very comfortable and can be pre-set to the seating adjustments of two drivers. These seats are higher that give better support to the driver’s back and also gives a good view of the traffic.

These vehicles are also idle for people who like to go out on camping trips. The four wheel drive SUVs generally have good towing capacity and can easily tow a small boat or camper.

These vehicles also have a good suspension and brake system that increases the driver’s control over the vehicle. They also come equipped with a advanced vibration system, a good transmission and body styling system, high steering sensitivity, good gearing controls, tracking system, articulation and high ground clearance. All these aspects make the four wheel drive cars adequate for off-roading.

MI Car Dealers Announce: SUVs Safer than Cars, Minivans Still Overall Safest

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

DETROIT, M.I. – MI car dealers have heard today that SUVs have been officially redeemed with new technology that has made them safer for drivers and passengers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted a study of vehicles during the time period of 2006-2009 to reevaluate the safety versus fatality rates.

Officially, SUVs from 2006-2009 have 50 percent less of a driver fatality rate than cars of the same weight. Anti-rollover technology is the main cause of this tremendous shift in safety.

“The rollover risk in SUVs used to outweigh their size/weight advantage, but that’s no longer the case, thanks to electronic stability control,” said Anne McCartt, the institute’s senior vice president for research, in a press release. “Pound for pound, SUVs have lower death rates.”

The Equation

To qualify for the study, SUV models needed at least 100,000 registered vehicle years of model years 2005-2008. A ‘registered vehicle’ is defined as one vehicle registered for one year or two vehicles registered for six months each. According to The Detroit News, “in assessing risk, the study counts the number of years that each model has been on the road and multiplies that by the number of that model’s vehicles.”

By using this equation is has been calculated that:

Minivan deaths totaled 25 per million registered vehicle years
SUV deaths totaled 28 per million registered vehicle years
Truck deaths totaled 52 per million registered vehicle years
Car deaths totaled 56 per million registered vehicle years

MI car dealers can see that the SUV is now very close behind the minivan as the second safest type of vehicle available on the market.

Rollover Technology Enforced

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced in 2007 that all vehicles had to be equipped with electronic stability control (ESC) by the 2012 model year. By the time the 2008 models were being released, ESC was standard on 65 percent of cars, 96 percent of SUVs and 11 percent of trucks.

The purpose of ESC is to avoid skidding, maintain control if the vehicle swerves and apply brakes to the wheels to stabilize the vehicle to avoid a rollover.

Total cost to add ESC for automakers was estimated in 2007 to be 5 million. This breaks down to 1 per vehicle with antilock brakes and 9 for those vehicles without to add ESC to models. However, the benefits were estimated that 71 percent of passenger car rollovers and 84 percent of SUV rollovers will be prevented. In other words, 5,300 and 9,600 deaths may be prevented along with 238,000 injuries.

Rollover Technology Saves Lives

Final calculations in 2009 showed that 8,300 rollovers had occurred while rollovers had averaged more than 10,000 for years.

The IIHS said in its report that the “ESC reduced the risk of a fatality in a single-vehicle crash by 49 percent and 20 percent in multiple-vehicle crashes. It also lowers the risk of a deadly crash by 33 percent overall, and cuts the risk of a fatal single-vehicle rollover by 73 percent.”

New Rules and Regulations

The NHTSA added more rules to the original 2007 regulation, which include:

Upgrades that will reduce the number of people who are partially or completely ejected through side windows during rollover crashes. This will begin to phase in by 2013.
Upgrades to fortify and strengthen roofs during rollovers, which include roof strength requirements being increased to 6,000 pounds. This will begin to phase in by 2017.

MI car dealers will begin to see stronger and safer vehicles as the years continue. With SUVs so close to minivans in terms of safety, more features may eventually bring the two to the same level of safety.

Why are Small Suvs Better for Your Family?

Posted in: Suvs | | No Comments »>

Cars are perhaps one of the costliest investments in one’s life at the same time being an object of utility as well as prestige. Therefore, buying a car needs much consideration and many things should be borne in mind before taking the crucial decision of buying a car. Moreover, with so many SUVs and other highend cars making their presence felt in the market arena, the choice has become even more difficult than it ever was. Therefore, to make your decision a little easier, this article will provide you with insights as to why it is better to but small SUVs rather than opting for bigger ones.

-The first aspect that you will require to keep in mind is the escalating fuel price. It is a fact that fuel price is going higher and higher every day and that is why everyone is actually looking to downsize their vehicles. However, downsizing does not necessarily mean that one has to give up the ability of driving through off roads or adverse weather conditions – the obvious way out here are highend cars and compact SUVs. In comparison with larger highend cars, smaller and more compact SUVs typically need less fuel and by simply buying a 4-cylinder engine powered car, you will be able to gain more mileage for each gallon of fuel.
-The second most important argument for buying small highend cars for your family is their affordability. The compact SUVs are priced affordably in comparison to larger ones that are priced remarkable and often beyond most people’s reach. It is always better to vie for something within one’s ambit rather than go for frustrating financing techniques, which can only worsen the situation.
-The handling efficiency of smaller SUVs again gives them an edge over other bigger highend cars. For instance, a Jeep wrangler would need 34.9 feet radius to turn, which is by far less than that of a Toyota Camry Sedan, making maneuvering a lot easier.
-The smaller SUVs include many features that one cannot easily find in the larger highend cars. These include, but are not limited to, foldable top, dent resistance, easy loading, multiple seating rows, and so on. For example, the Nissan Xterra is equipped with stylish tubular rails on the roof that easily accommodates a number of baskets for storage and a leg up stair to allow the driver climb in to the vehicle with ease.
-The smaller SUVs are now a great deal safer than they used to be in earlier times and the track distance between the front and rear set of tires provide the cars with greater stability, making the drive a lot more secured. Furthermore, many small highend cars are now available with electronic safety control features that minimize the risks on road.
-There are other additional safety features as available in the smaller SUVs, such as anti-lock breaks, traction control, stability control, standard and special safety airbags, and so on.

Therefore, you see, when it comes to purchasing highend cars for your family, getting small and compact SUVs is the way to go about it.
